From Our Own Correspondent
Erwin l’Ami, our columnist on correspondence chess, got carried away by a King’s Gambit he saw, resulting in "a full overview on this fantastic opening" – 21st century style, of course. This column also features a deep analysis by guest contributor GM Krishnan Sasikiran, who has grown to be a prominent correspondence player, of a completely new idea in the Zaitsev line (the famous 9…e3 from the 1987 Kasparov-Karpov match) of the Reversed Sicilian.

Reviews
Glenn Flear reviews three books and two DVD’s. The English GM was surprised by the many creative findings by Semko Semkov in his book The Modern Triangle, and also by Daniel Hausrath’s debut Double Fianchetto, which offers a "lifestyle Change" involving a minimum of memory work. Ilya Odessky’s Winning Quickly with 1.b3 and 1…b6 is bewildering, strangely organized, but "tremendous fun"!
The two DVD’s Flear reviews are by top theoreticians: Erwin l’Ami’s The Benko Gambit Explained and Rustam Kasimdzhanov’s The Benoni is back in business.

From Our Own Correspondent
This special column on correspondence chess by GM Erwin l’Ami features hot-off-the-press material on the Queen’s Indian with 4...Ba6, the London System with the sharp lines that arise after Black’s crucial reply 3...c5 and 4...Qb6, and some audacious black play in the Moscow Slav. Moreover, l’Ami analyses two games that seem to suggest that Tiviakov’s Scandinavian with 3...Qd6 and the French McCutcheon are in heavy weather.

Reviews
This time Glenn Flear reviews exclusively books on 1.d4 openings. The first one, Attacking with g2-g4 by Dmitry Kryakvin (New In Chess), is quite special, covering quite a lot of ground and is quite inspiring according to Flear. Other reviewed works are M. Chetverik’s interesting book The Complete Bogo-Indian Defence, the high-level Cheparinov’s 1.d4 Volume 1, written by another top-theoretician from Bulgaria, Efstratios Grivas’s Grivas Opening Laboratory Volume 1, which may be the first part of the Greek GM’s ‘magnum opus’, and Ivan Ivanisevic’s Modernized Delayed Benoni, which is full of sharp ideas as you might expect.

Forum

A big Forum Section this time with, of course, first the results of the Novelty of the Year contest. Who played the greatest novelty published in the 2019 Yearbooks? There is also a contribution by Robert Ris on his upset defeat of top player David Navara in the Four Knights Sicilian, Jeroen Bosch analyses his vintage Velimirovic Attack win over Jan Werle, and new contributor GM Francesco Rambaldi writes about more offbeat Najdorfs from the Tata Steel tournament. And much more!

Correspondence chess

Erwin l’Ami column again features a game by OTB GM Krishnan Sasikiran, who found a spectacular novelty in the Scotch Gambit. The Dutch GM also presents new material on the 7.d5 pawn sac in the Queen’s Indian, the Yugoslav Dragon, the Exchange Grünfeld with 7.Bc4, and the Slav with 4...Bf5.

Reviews

Glenn Flear starts his column with a review of Fabiano Caruana’s 3-volume DVD on the Ruy Lopez for ChessBase. A slightly different medium from what he is used to, but he ‘found it fascinating listening to the World No. 2 explaining his way of thinking about the various options in the Spanish.’ Three repertoire books are compared this time: Kaufman’s New Repertoire for Black and White and Christoph Sielecki’s Keep It Simple 1.d4 from New In Chess, as well as the new edition of A Startling Chess Opening Repertoire by and Chris Baker and Graham Burgess. Finally, Priyadharshan Kannappan’s surprising new book The Modernized Berlin Wall Defense is held up against the light.

Correspondence chess
In his column, Erwin l?Ami presents interesting correspondence games by OTB GMs Krishnan Sasikiran and... himself! Also, a big theoretical find in Fischer?s 2.Nc3 Caro-Kann by Kristo Miettinen, a highly disputed line of the Austrian Attack vs the Pirc, and this issue?s sideline is 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 in the Sicilian with 2...d6 from a game Milen Petrov-Walter Steiger.

Reviews
Glenn Flear?s Reviews column focuses on the question whether there will ever be an ?Ultimate Main Line?. Will it start with 1.d4 ? Several books reviewed in this Yearbook are about this first move: Boris Avrukh?s Grandmaster Repertoire 2B: 1.d4 Dynamic Systems, Cyrus Lakdawala?s book on his latest repertoire change 1 d4 with 2 c4, and Viktor Moskalenko?s An Attacking Repertoire for White with 1.d4. And then there is also Tibor Karolyi?s 2-part book Play the Dutch!. The fifth reviewed book, on the treacherous Hippopotamus Defence by Alessio De Santis, is especially special.
