Für den am Starttag noch 31-jährigen Titelverteidiger war dies bereits der 5. WM-Kampf, sein gleichaltriger Gegner saß erstmals am Brett auf der WM-Bühne. Carlsen ging als Nummer 1 der Weltgangliste und mit einer Elo-Zahl von 2856 als Favorit in das Match. Nepomnjaschtschi nahm die Position 5 ein.
