So sollte es auch im Dezember 2020 sein, als der Russe Jan Nepomnjaschtschi in Dubai auf den norwegischen Titelinhaber Magnus Carlsen treffen sollte. Die Covid-19-Pandemie setze die Veranstaltung jedoch patt, sie musste in den Herbst 2021 verschoben werden. Ab dem 24. November 2021 wurde das auf 14 reguläre Wettkampfpartien angesetzte Duell dann endlich gestartet.
