Emanuel Lasker was world champion for a remarkable 27 years (1894-1921) and is generally regarded as having been way ahead of his time in his understanding of chess. He primarily regarded chess as a fight and considered that the strongest move in a position was the one that created greatest problems for the opponent and not necessarily the one that was objectively “best”.

The World Champion

A Winning Formula

The book is in both the English and German languages. Schmidt’s own, brief, recollections are included and his family has provided material on all aspects of his life.

Paul Schmidt was born in Estonia, in the Russian Empire in 1916 during World War 1. His family was soon fleeing from the Russian Revolution to Riga and then to Germany. They became German citizens.

Later they returned to Estonia and became Estonian citizens. This is where Schmidt began his international chess career which lasted from 1935 until 1950.

Richard Réti is one of the most fascinating characters in the history of chess. Réti developed theories that were regarded as little less than revolutionary in his era. He asserted that, contrary to classical principles, the centre need not be occupied by pawns. This must have seemed like heresy to the classically-minded grandmasters of his day. This new approach was dubbed “Hypermodern” and led to the development of the Réti Opening (1 Nf3). Réti’s theories have been proved sound and have stood the test of time. Réti scored many fine wins against the great players of his day.

My interview with Eugenio took place roughly a decade ago in Manila. The original idea was to make a book of interviews with former world class players who made it to the world championship candidates matches. Unlike present day top players they can talk much more freely about their secrets and approaches to chess.

Mikhail Tal is a true legend of chess. He was the World Champion and also holds the world record for the longest unbeaten run in competitive chess. Tal is widely regarded to be the greatest attacking player of all time. Nicknamed ‘the magician from Riga’, Tal was a creative genius who made it look as though absolutely anything was possible over the chessboard.
